Umrah is the spiritual pilgrimage that is a milestone to any Muslim. The Umrah can be performed at any time of the year in comparison to Hajj that is to be performed at a specific time of the Islamic calendar. Due to this flexibility a large number of believers get a chance to go and pay homage to the holy city of Mecca in order to find forgiveness, peace and a new relationship with the religion.
The idea of making this religious pilgrimage may be daunting to first-timers. You would want to ensure that every ritual is performed in the correct manner and the prayers made with the correct attitude. Knowing exactly the sequence of events, the clothes to wear. The paths to follow in the holy places will help you spend all the time on the spiritual experience, and not on practical things.
This is a step-by-step guide that breaks down the process of doing Umrah into small and easy to comprehend steps. The knowledge you will have on the basic rituals of Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and Halq or Taqsir will ensure you complete your pilgrimage with peace of mind and confidence.

Step 1: Entering the State of Ihram
The pilgrimage of Umrah starts a long time before you reach the Kaaba. It begins with going on Ihram a holy state of purity and purpose.
Physical Preparation
It is Sunnah to practice physical cleansing before putting on the Ihram garments. This involves trimming your nails, shaving off unwanted body hair and performing a complete ritual bath (Ghusl). You can use perfume on your body, but avoid using it on the Ihram clothes.
The Ihram Garments
When it comes to men, Ihram consists of two seamless and white clothes. One is tied about the waist, to cover the lower part of the body (Izar), the other over the shoulders (Rida). Men are not supposed to wear clothes, underwear or shoes that conceal the ankles and top of the foot. Rather women can dress in their normal, modest Islamic clothes. In the dress they are to wear, they must be covering all their bodies, except the face and hands.
Making the Intention (Niyyah)
Before passing the specified border called Miqat, you have to be in the state of Ihram. Flying directly to Jeddah, you will most likely pass the Miqat on board the airplane. The pilot normally makes announcements when the plane is approaching the boundary. Here you are saying that you will perform Umrah saying, Labbayk Allahumma Umrah (O Allah, here I perform Umrah). Ihram restrictions are now in force, such as no quarrelling, no hair-cutting, no perfume.
Reciting the Talbiyah
When you make the intention, you keep repeating the Talbiyah: “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la sharika laka Labbayk, Innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.” Go on with the repetition of this beautiful confession of faith until you get to the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and are on the verge of commencing your Tawaf.
Step 2: Performing Tawaf
When you get to Masjid al-Haram, you will do Tawaf which is seven counterclockwise circles of Kaaba.
Starting the Circuits
Go to the Kaaba and find the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). This is where each circuit begins. You can kiss or touch the Black Stone, as possible. Since there are huge crowds, all one has to do is to face it, lift the right hand and say, Bismillahi Alluh Akbar.
Completing the Seven Rounds
Begin to circle Kaaba holding it on your left. In men, it is a Sunnah to show the shoulder of the right (Idtiba) in every seven rounds, and walk with a brisk stride (Raml) in first three rounds. When performing the Tawaf, no particular, obligatory prayers have to be recited. You are able to read the Quran, do personal supplications (Dua) or ask forgiveness using your own language. Recitation of Quranic verse: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban-nar, between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone is quite recommendable.
Praying at Maqam Ibrahim
When you have finished the seventh circuit, lay your right shoulder (in men) on top of the shoulder, and go to Station of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim). In this instance, it is two brief Rakat (units of prayer) you are to pray. The Surah Al-Kafirun is to be recited in the first Rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second Rakat, as Sunnah.
Drinking Zamzam Water
After the prayer go to the water stations and drink the blessed Zamzam well. Take water in abundance, turn to face the Qibla and make hearty supplications, since the water of Zamzam has been known to be a healing, blessing water.
Step 3: Performing Sa’i
The other compulsory is Saai that provides the marvellous faith and strength of Hajar (the wife of Prophet Ibrahim) when she requested water to her baby son Ishmael. It is a seven times walk between Safa and Marwah hills.
Starting at Mount Safa
Climb the hill of Safa, turn towards the Kaaba, and spread your hands, and glorify Allah. Praise: La ilaha illah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa aala kulli shai’in qadir. Before going down make your own Duas here.
Walking to Marwah
Head towards the hill of Marwah. On the road you will see an area that is marked with green lights. This particular area is made to encourage men to walk or run faster than usual, whilst the women continue walking normally. When you arrive at Marwah then turn again to the Kaaba and say the same praises and supplication you said at Safa.
Completing the Seven Laps
The walk between Safa and Marwah is considered one lap and the walk between Marwah and Safa is the second lap. You will proceed with this back and forth until you have made seven laps and this is where your Sa’i ends on the hill of Marwah.
Step 4: Halq or Taqsīr (Shaving or Trimming Hair)
The last thing you need to do is to cut off your hair to complete your Umrah. This gesture represents humility, spiritual rebirth and shedding of worldly sins.
In men, all the hair can be removed (Halq). But it is also good to have a shaved head with a trimming of the hair all around (Taqsīr). In the case of women, all they need to do is cut off a small part of hair, approximately the length of the end of their locks.
After this is done, the limitations of Ihram are officially removed. Now you can change into your ordinary clothes and continue going about. Your Umrah is fulfilled, and your spiritual scroll is washed.
